A recent survey shows that nearly half of the UK's owned cats are not microchipped. Though it is not yet a legal requirement to microchip cats in the UK, it will become compulsory for all dogs in England, Wales and Scotland from April 2016.
During the month of June there will be special microchipping offers at discounted prices for pet owners all over the country. Your local vet or local publications should have more details of offers available.
Why microchipping is important:
- Microchipping offers a safe and permanent method of identification for your pets, increasing the chances of you being safely reunited
- Microchipping is the most effective way of identifying a lost pet
- Each microchip has a unique number. This number is stored on a national database. This chip, when scanned, reveals the owner's name and address from the database's records
- Just slightly smaller than a grain of rice, a microchip is inserted under the cat's skin between the shoulder blades
- The procedure is very simple and is no more painful than an injection. A cat will not be aware of the microchip's presence once inserted
- If you move house, you must remember to change your microchip details. You can do this by contacting your microchip database

I'm microchipped!
We are all chipped and agree it is so important. I have heard some amazing stories of animals being reunited with their people after being missing for more than a year because they were chipped.
I am chipped but my brothers aren't. Mom says she really needs to do that because it is so important.

I must confess my cat isn't microchipped. I should definitively think about it, but since is an indoor cat I have postponed it.
I think that cats should be microchipped too. They tend to wander if they are outdoors and it would be heartbreaking for them to get lost because they arent chipped.
I'm chipped. Feline Rescue did that before I came home with Mommy!
There are a lot of benefits to microchipping pets. Unfortunately, the animal control shelter in Detroit (very close to where I live) doesn't check for microchips before euthanizing animals if they are found. We are working on a lot of reforms around here.
We're both microchipped, and we think it's impawtant for both indoor and outdoor cats. Purrs

Great post. I hope to get all my cats microchipped someday. So far only 2 are because the shelter I got them from did it.
We have 2 Micro-Chipped kitties (they came from a shelter) the other 5 are not. All our cats are indoor only cats though and rarely get outside.
