Wordy Wednesday: Cats and Halloween

Cats aren't evil! Humans are!

(OK, some humans are!)

What's got me so angry? Well, Mum and I were discussing Halloween and the history of cats. Not that I don't have knowledge of what actually happened to us felines down the ages, but I try to live in the moment and not to think things that bother me. However, now that Mum's brought it up again I can't help being annoyed and so is she!

It's no lie that if you were a crazy cat lady in the Middle Ages you would have been accused of being a witch and burnt at the stake, and your little furry purring friends would have joined you.

Though cats were worshipped as gods during Ancient Egyptian times, things took a turn for the worse for us, especially in the Medieval period. In fact, right up to the 18th century the association of cats - especially black cats - with the supernatural and dark forces became widespread throughout the world. In Europe alone, millions of cats were tortured and killed. Oh yes, the idiotic humans just loved to throw cats from balconies and towers, as well as burning them alive, all due to superstitious and religious nonsense.

As I said, black cats were the most suspect and were believed to bring bad luck. Some people still believe it, because many black cats never get a forever home, or take longer to find one. And some shelters just won't rehome black cats close to Halloween season because there are evil humans who take pleasure in torturing beautiful creatures for fun.

But are black cats really bad luck? It depends where you live. In some parts of the world a black cat is a bad omen, in others it is the white cat. And others believe the black cat will bring good luck, but other cultures think that a white cat is the bringer of good fortune. You know what Mum and I believe? It's daft, that's what!

So, because of all these idiotic beliefs, cats had it bad for a long time - and that's why we deserve all the pampering you lot bestow upon us today! Well, most of you, that is. Some people will never like us. But that's life, isn't it?

The great thing is that cats rule the internet now and that's just super great!

Here is evidence of just how lovable we kittes are. It's the video of me and Mum that I shared last Monday and I'm posting the link in case you missed it (though most of my cat loving friends and kitty friends don't need that proof!)

Fortunately most of these myths about black cats are a thing of the past. My first cat was a black beauty and he was the sweetest cat I ever met. And yes, Athena, I agree with you - all cats deserve to be pampered!

We agree with you and Mum, Athena. It's upsetting that the stupid superstitions about black cats persist. We have seen it happen again and again where beautiful housepanthers wait much longer than our other friends to find their forever homes. Personally, we think black cats are GOOD luck ... we know our Gracie and Zoe bring us much joy and happiness every day, for sure.

Hugs!

With or without cats, my human is pretty sure she would have been burned at the stake! She is very glad to be alive now... although there seems to be some lingering cat myths that need to be debunked.

My black Manx named Amos was the coolest cat in town. One of the fan favorites in my book is based on him. ♥

Great photo and frame. There are many bad humans, but no bad cats as far as I am concerned.

See, that’s why I don’t like humans. It’s time for us to start torturing them. Great video. I’m gonna have looking for Halloween frames. You guys have found the best ones.

Throughout history, humans have proven their lack of intelligence. It's amazing they've survived their own stupidity.

Love your Halloween photo frame. It is sad that some humans still believe these stupid things!
