Christmas Safety Tips For Cats (and a Sunday Selfie)

Happy Sunday!

Christmas cat safety tips

Mum isn't too crazy about Christmas decorations so luckily we don't have any hazardous ones in the house. Not even a tree. She's no Scrooge, she just doesn't understand what all the fuss is about, and she wants to protect me from any potential dangers. However, she does like the cosiness Christmas decorations can evoke in the home, so she lights a candle bridge and hangs her favourite angel mobile, plus places a few safe objects around the house. But we don't have tinsel or any harmful ones, such as baubles. We also tell people who visit not to bring toxic plants and flowers, especially lilies.

Mum likes to light a scented candle for a bit, but only if she is there to supervise and never ever leaves a candle burning when she goes out the room. She loves Christmas scented candles like those that smell of mulled wine or cinnamon. But she will only light the one - not hundreds like some people do, which also poses a fire risk!

A lot of people may not know this but even burning scented candles can have a toxic effect, not just on your pets, but on you and your human family's health too.

You can read more Christmas safety tips for cats here and here

Next week we'll be looking at what you should never give your cat to eat at Christmas (or any time of the year for that matter.)

Have a great week, and always be extra cautious where your pets are concerned because things can get out of hand (or paw) during silly season!

These are great Christmas tips. This human will admit that she does love her Christmas decorations, but only ones that are safe for the furbabies. No tinsel, no glass ornaments, and she's too nervous to ever light candles, although she does like them. Oh, and what a lovely selfie, Athena!

Lovely selfie, as always, Athena. You and Mum came up with some really good safety tips. Luckily, Gracie and Zoe are very good about the decorations, but we are still careful not to have any that might be dangerous. Just in case.

Hugs!

Good reminders! My dearly departed heart cat Eamon taught me the lesson of the candles quite well. He loved to put his paw in the flame and then shake it out when his furs caught fire. After I caught him doing it one time, I removed all the candles! I have been putting them back selectively now that he's gone, but I always watch carefully while they're lit. Cats can be crazy!

Great tips, we have a tree, but no icicles and all unbreakable ornaments.

Excellent reminders! I'm the same as your Mum ... I'm not big on decorations ... and Bear's safety is a big part of that. I also have an affinity for scented candles ... but I read earlier this year about their toxic fumes and they somehow don't smell as sweet anymore :) You're gorgeous as always, beautiful Athena!

Someone on Twitter wanted us to do an article about lilly pollen being fatal for cats. I need to track them down. Happy Sunday Selfie from us all.

I used to burn scented candles but haven't done so in years after learning that they can be bad for you. We also don't have a Christmas tree. Olive can't stop chewing on it. So, we have a fill in tree instead. It's pre-lit and is just white branches. Us cat moms do what we have to do!
